| Abstract: | One of the main challenges to agro researchorganizations is the need to incorporateinnovative strategies considering sustainability.On Portuguese rice chain it is noticeableeconomic changes associated with social andenvironmental concerns. This study aims todescribe the dynamic of the changes at theNational Institute of Agro Research (INIA)-Portugal, one of the most important organizationsin this area. The results indicate thepresence of three main stages on the developmentof the research at INIA, namely "INIAleader of the applied research of agro productionof rice", "INIA reduced role on appliedresearch of agro production of rice", "INIApromoter of chain organization and additionof value to rice".
