| Abstract: | José Fernando de Barros Castro Correia (1928-2023) was a University Professor and Physician who excelled in the teaching and research of Anatomy and in the development of Ophthalmology across various domains, including education, research, clinical practice, and the management of a healthcare unit. He played a central role at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP) and the São João University Hospital Center (CHUSJ). His career reflects the transformations of Portuguese medicine in the second half of the 20th century, marked by the modernization of medical education and the evolution of medical and surgical specialties. Based on the analysis of documentary sources, scientific publications, and oral testimonies, this study reconstructs his academic and professional trajectory, highlighting his contributions to ophthalmological research and innovation, as well as to the pedagogy of Anatomy and the organization of clinical services. Situated within the fields of the History of Medicine and Scientific Biography, this research underscores the impact of Castro Correia's academic, clinical, and research activities, emphasizing his legacy in Anatomy, Ophthalmology, and medical education in Portugal. |
| Description: | José Fernando de Barros Castro Correia (1928-2023) foi um Professor Universitário e Médico que se destacou no ensino e investigação da Anatomia e no desenvolvimento da Oftalmologia, em diferentes campos, como no ensino, na investigação, na clínica e na gestão de uma unidade de saúde, desempenhando um papel central na Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade do Porto (FMUP) e no Centro Hospitalar Universitário de São João (CHUSJ). O seu percurso reflete as transformações da Medicina Portuguesa na segunda metade do século XX, marcadas pela modernização do ensino médico e pela evolução das especialidades médico-cirúrgicas. A partir da análise de fontes documentais, publicações científicas e testemunhos orais, este estudo reconstrói a sua trajetória académica e profissional, destacando o seu contributo para a investigação e inovação da Oftalmologia, bem como para a pedagogia da Anatomia e a organização dos serviços clínicos. Inserindo-se no campo da História da Medicina e da Biografia Científica, esta investigação evidencia o impacto da atividade académica, clínica e investigativa de Castro Correia, enfatizando o seu legado na Anatomia, na Oftalmologia e no ensino médico em Portugal. |
