Docência, Investigação e Liderança na Obra do Professor António Tomé Ribeiro

Abstract

António Tomé Ribeiro (1931-2013) was a renowned University Professor and Physician at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto. He entered the medical course of this Faculty in 1949, which he completed in 1956. He received his Doctoral degree in 1972. His career was through teaching and researching the scientific areas to which he dedicated himself, such as Medical Propaedeutics, Internal Medicine, the Infectious Diseases Clinic and Gastroenterology, reaching the top of his academic career. It was in Gastroenterology that his value was most evidenced, being the founder and first physician of the Gastroenterology Unit of the Hospital São João and its Director between 1992 and 2001. He held important positions, namely the Presidency of the Portuguese Society of Gastroenterology and the Portuguese Association for the Study of the Liver. Between 1986 and 1988, he took over the Clinical Direction of the Hospital São João. He was part of all the management bodies of the Faculty of Medicine of Porto, namely the Board of Directors, Scientific and Pedagogical. In this context, he was Chairman of the Board of Directors of FMUP for two periods, between 1990 and 1993. An example in Teaching, Research and Leadership in Medicine, a stimulus for societies to come.
