Abstract:	This article aims to analyze how, for her crime of adultery, Hester Prynne, Nathaniel Hawthorne's female protagonist in The Scarlet Letter, was punished with the mark of a letter A she had to wear on her chest, and which, paradoxically, will become a sign of her redemption and liberty in a rigid and intolerant society. On the other hand, that letter, the first of the alphabet, will also be discussed as a representation of the founding process of America as a nascent New World.
Description:	Neste artigo, pretende-se analisar o modo como, pelo seu crime de adultério, Hester Prynne, protagonista feminina de Nathaniel Hawthorne em The Scarlet Letter, é obrigada a usar uma letra escarlate no seu peito enquanto marca do seu pecado, a qual, paradoxalmente, se transforma na sua margem de redenção e liberdade numa sociedade rígida e intolerante. Por outro lado, essa letra A, iniciadora do alfabeto, será igualmente perspectivada como representação do processo de fundação da América como um Novo Mundo a haver.
