This article aims to analyze how, for her crime of adultery, Hester Prynne, Nathaniel Hawthorne's female protagonist in The Scarlet Letter, was punished with the mark of a letter A she had to wear on her chest, and which, paradoxically, will become a sign of her redemption and liberty in a rigid and intolerant society. On the other hand, that letter, the first of the alphabet, will also be discussed as a representation of the founding process of America as a nascent New World.
