Perspectivas para a manutenção e utilização do Pavilhão Carlos Ramos na FAUP

Abstract

The following dissertation intends to explore questions within the maintenance of buildings, as an intervention practice on the preexisting building. Focusing towards its preventive and continuous conservation throughout time, in order to ensure the proper operation and preservation of the architectural values. A brief historical background about this theme is executed, in a broader sense, including an historical perspective and its meanings, methodologies and applications at national and international level, as well as the particular criteria of its implementation in buildings conservation of the twentieth century. In this sense, the objective is to clarify the relevance of its practice in the current context, characterized by excessive edification and degradation by the lack of use and maintenance. On the other hand, it is intended to understand the importance of user's participation in the buildings' maintenance processes, as well as the role that the architect can play in its implementation strategies. Carlos Ramos Pavilion of the Architecture Faculty of the University of Porto (FAUP) is the case study chosen for this work, being made an historical background of the same, including the context of its construction and operations registration over time, followed by the implantation of an intervention strategy directed towards the building and its users. It includes the identification, characterization and diagnosis, which allow the substantiation of some perspectives presented for the maintenance and use of the building, thus seeking to avoid reactive and costly interventions in the future, as well as the loss of the building authenticity. The developed work deepens concepts, strategies and maintenance methodologies of the preexisting building, from its theoretical definition to its operative application, proposing to address the problems and needs of the current context as well as enhance, preserve and utilize the buildings to a more sustainable transmission to future generations.
