Chile: da Arquitectura Vernacular ao projecto de intervenção; a estação de Gonzalez Bastias.

Abstract

This dissertation is based and motivated on a personal experience of having lived in the post 2010 earthquake panorama in Chile, as part of the Mobility program. In response to this disaster several intervention programs appeared, of which the Architecture Faculty of Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile choose to be one of them. Getting closer to this reality was emphasized in the project course throughout the presentation of the last operating railroad in Chile. In the connecting approach, the following Master Dissertation, Chile: from Vernacular Architecture until intervention project; the station González Bastías, conceive of a project intervention to insert the rail station in a patrimonial and cultural context. This work aims, through a real situation and context, to investigate an advantageous opportunity of realizing a project intervention in the rail station on the railroad line Talca - Constitución. Being part of the area cultural and architectural heritage, this rail station raises not only the heritage issues of this territory, as well as the inhabitants' culture of the Maule region. We look for an answer based on analyse recognition and historical interpretation of the pre- existing - place as a construction - referring to methodological principles. Each work dedicates to different architectonical issues. The desire of understating the place to intervene in it, was the link between issues intimately connected with vernacular value, from its importance as an heritage, to it's standing in contemporary architecture; and the project attitude as a response to a program in a rural context. This study was ruled by the reflection on the chances of enhancing the relationship of existing, with the required standards of contemporary programs. Here we questioned how to adapt the pre-existing to "new uses", and on the other hand, how to adapt "new uses" to pre-existing.
