Issue Date: 2012
Abstract: Parenting styles allow to understand the parents influence on child's development. Initially, three parenting styles were described, the authoritarian, the authoritative and the permissive. Afterward, the permissive style was break down into other two styles, the indulgent and the neglectful. Between the four styles described in the literature, authoritative or democratic is referred to be the desirable one. However, the most common style is the authoritarian, which is associated with parental control on food ingestion, either restriction or pressure to eat. These practices may have adverse effects on children's development of self-control in eating pattern, reflecting on children's weight gain. Knowing parenting styles and practices, in particular those related with eating behaviors and childhood obesity may become vital for the development of intervention programs that pretend to reverse the growing trend of childhood obesity.
Description: Os estilos parentais permitem perceber a influência dos pais no desenvolvimento da criança.
