Title: Co-creating change: gender integration in research and institutional innovation at the University of Porto
Issue Date: 2026-10-21
Abstract: Integrating gender dimensions into research is critical for enhancing the quality, relevance, and societal impact of scientific inquiry. This paper presents the development and implementation of the Gender Integration Assessment (GIA) tool at the University of Porto, within the scope of the RESET project. The GIA tool was designed to support researchers in systematically embedding gender considerations in research design, methodology, and outcomes, contributing to a more equitable and inclusive academic environment. Grounded in the principles of gender mainstreaming, intersectionality, and co-design, the tool's development followed a participatory, user-centred approach involving researchers, research managers, and top-level decision-makers. The paper outlines three core phases of the process: conceptual foundations, building a Community of Practitioners (CoP), and designing a responsive, practical tool tailored to diverse disciplinary and institutional contexts. The involvement of researchers across fields ensured that the tool would reflect real-world needs and be adaptable across epistemic cultures. Meanwhile, the engagement of top management helped secure institutional alignment, sustainability, and visibility for the tool. The GIA tool also aims to build capacity by fostering reflexivity, offering tailored feedback, and serving as a learning platform. Its digital format includes interactive features and explanatory resources to guide researchers through the integration process. Currently adopted at the University of Porto, the GIA tool contributes to the broader mission of advancing gender equality in research while reinforcing the transformative role of user-centred, inclusive design in institutional change.
