Ecos do Japão: Da Tradição à Vanguarda

Abstract

This dissertation studies the trajectory of Japanese architecture throughout history, examining its origins, development, current practices, and global impact. The work is divided into two main parts. The first focuses on the geographical, prehistoric, and historical contextualization of the Japanese nation, distilling the events, ideas, and works that marked each era. In the second part, the established context frames the singular sociopolitical circumstances of Japan in the mid-19th century, passing through its rapid industrialization, participation in international conflicts, and miraculous reconstruction in the second half of the 20th century. Thus, it explores the confrontation of the emerging avant-garde with the issues of identity, tradition, and regeneration, while dialoguing with the West, the Modern Movement, and vertiginous economic growth. The dissertation culminates in the analysis of the repercussions of a varied and fertile legacy, globally celebrated and decisive for the future of architecture.
