Abstract

This dissertation develops the project for a house for my parents, to be built in Romariz, in the municipality of Santa Maria da Feira. The opportunity to work on a real-life situation has, over the course of the research, become a chance to examine the house, the 'ordinary house', and the design process itself. The aim of the dissertation goes beyond the development of a specific proposal for the house. Through the simultaneous development of research and design, the work examines the relationship between place and everyday life. Ordinary housing is understood as a disciplinary field capable of revealing continuities, uses and ways of living. The analysis of Romariz accompanies the development of the house, recognising the territory as an active condition of the project. The work is constructed through successive approaches, comparing the family's habits and expectations with the limits and demands of architecture. The dissertation reflects on the design of an ordinary house, understanding architecture as a continuation of everyday life.
