Grelha e Aparato: Espinho e a mediação da urbanidade

Abstract

This dissertation arises from a personal need to study the city where I was born and lived, and from the duty to adopt a critical stance toward it, in an attempt to deeply understand its dynamics and consequences. Espinho has increasingly become the stage for widespread disinvestment and decline, a process confirmed by public opinion. The growing number of abandoned structures, the weak internal dynamization, and the continuous destruction of material heritage reinforce these urban transformations. Together, these factors highlight the diminished attractiveness that the city once possessed. The nostalgia felt by older social groups reveals that this latent condition has accelerated in recent years. The study of this past-extending into the recent present-results from a personal devotion to the city of Espinho, not under a contemplative or melancholic lens, but with a desire to act in the present. Paradoxically, there is also a widespread sense of local pride among the city's inhabitants and regular visitors, supported by an infrastructure in constant activity that continuously attracts tourism. Contrary to nostalgia, one senses an uninterrupted frenzy: casinos, beaches, shops, cafés, movement... The dismantling of this contradiction becomes one of the central motivations for writing this dissertation. Criticism of the city is as widespread as the lack of willingness among Espinho's residents to take action. A depressive stance constantly countered by ecstatic euphoria is reflected in one of the city's most striking characteristics. A continuous schizophrenia that opposes the lack of stimulus with the constant need for it. The general sense of well‑being, frequently commented on by residents in the streets, stands in contrast with all other positions regarding Espinho's current condition. The readings are as diverse as they are contradictory and incongruent-yet simultaneous. An attempt to filter and organize these opinions, as regulated as the grid that stages all these activities, proves, at an initial stage, impracticable. It is through the deconstruction of the palimpsest that has taken place within Espinho's urban fabric that I seek to find the rule that structures the chaos. Existing studies from the 19th century on the city of Espinho are mostly presented in a fragmented format, in direct discourse¹,². It is only at the turn of the century that this format transforms into "continuous" written elements, with a second‑person narrative structure³,⁴. This characteristic is important for understanding the city's own history. It is the Espinho resident who writes about Espinho and about their personal experiences, memories, and stories of the city: first, by factualizing it; then, by interpreting it. History, from this perspective, is not seen as a static or extinct element, but as a continuous construction of the past through the dynamics of the present⁵. Thus, to understand the contemporary paradigm, an in‑depth historical study becomes necessary. This investigation stems from architectural foundations, resulting from five years of architectural studies, which inevitably shape the interpretation of these events. This condition is not understood as a theoretical limitation, but as a specific and disciplinary position regarding the city and its trajectory. In this way, the writing of this document aims to create a narrative about Espinho that complements, dialogues with, and actively interacts with existing studies and documentation. In a first phase, it will present factual fragments that will allow, in a second phase, a personal interpretation and the de‑hierarchization of historical moments. This stance proposes to cross "major and minor" events, equating their importance in the city's genesis⁶: the dynamics that preceded the train's stop in Espinho are as significant as the inauguration of that infrastructure itself, along with its developments and consequences. Through the deconstruction of concrete events, social dynamics that actively structure and build the urban complex-both material and immaterial-are revealed. Identifying the relationships, segregations, identities, and privileges that emerge from this and other elements constitutes one of the main objectives of this study. These dynamics form conditions that reinforce and project urban materializations that perpetuate themselves throughout history. It is within this cause‑and‑effect system, between agents and networks, that the immaterial fabric compromising and promoting the city's development is revealed. The objective of this dissertation is, therefore, to operationalize-through design-the theoretical study of Espinho, by means of a detailed investigation of its urban structure. It is not a monographic study of the city, but the formulation of a critical stance on the present, anchored in an in‑depth historical understanding.
