| Issue Date: | 2026-07-02 |
| Abstract: | Anorexia Nervosa (AN) is a severe eating disorder, often emerging during adolescence, characterized by persistent dietary restriction, an intense fear of gaining weight, and disturbances in body image. Body dissatisfaction has been identified as one of the main risk and maintenance factors for eating disorder symptomatology. In parallel, rumination, defined as a pattern of repetitive and perseverative thinking focused on negative content, has been associated with increased emotional distress and the maintenance of various forms of psychopathology, including eating disorders. The present study aimed to examine the mediating role of rumination in the relationship between body dissatisfaction and eating disorder symptomatology in a clinical sample of female adolescents diagnosed with AN. The sample included 32 female adolescents aged between 14 and 17 years, divided into a clinical group (n = 16) and a control group without diagnosed psychopathology (n = 16). Participants completed the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q) and the Perseverative Thinking Questionnaire (PTQ). Descriptive analyses, group comparisons, Pearson correlations, and mediation analyses using the PROCESS macro in IBM SPSS Statistics (Version 30.0) were conducted. The results did not reveal statistically significant differences between the groups on the variables under study. However, within the clinical group, significant positive associations were found between rumination, body dissatisfaction, and eating disorder symptomatology, indicating that higher levels of negative perseverative thinking were associated with greater body dissatisfaction and higher levels of dietary restriction. These associations were not observed in the group of adolescents without AN. Furthermore, rumination was found to partially mediate the relationship between Weight Concern and Dietary Restriction among adolescents with AN. These findings suggest that rumination may represent an important cognitive mechanism in the maintenance of eating disorder symptomatology among adolescents with AN, highlighting the importance of addressing this construct in the psychological assessment and intervention of this population. Keywords: Anorexia Nervosa; body dissatisfaction; rumination; adolescence; dietary restraint; mediation. |
