Escutar a Arquitetura - da Teoria à Prática: O Edifício Parnaso interpretado em Música

Abstract

Demonstrating that the intersection of different artistic languages, when placed in service of one another, can mutually enhance their expressive potential, this Master's dissertation focuses on the connection between Architecture and Music. It becomes particularly relevant by exploring an aspect of architecture that goes beyond the most obvious, the visual and functional dimensions, incorporating another, the resonant and musical. In the first chapter, a general analysis of this relationship is presented. Beginning with a distinction between the sound environment of spaces and their inherent musicality, this chapter will focus on exploring concepts shared by both disciplines, followed by the presentation of case studies. The second chapter aims to translate the theoretical knowledge acquired into practical application: based on the study of the Parnaso Building, located in Porto and designed by the architect José Carlos Loureiro, using dance as a way of reading the space, I propose the creation of a musical piece as a reinterpretation of it, in order to highlight its architectural qualities and make it more comprehensible. This work can be summarized, in essence, as an exploration of the connection between theory and practice, Architecture and Music, with the body serving as a place of convergence. It demonstrates that interpretation finds its vehicle through observing, listening, and imagining - but above all through the intersection of all these senses - leading to an understanding of Architecture as a multisensorial experience.
