Leitura e leitores na mundividência da escrita ficcional camiliana

Abstract

In Camilian fiction, reading skills contribute to the characterisation of certain characters. This paper explores how this skill interferes with this characterisation, exploring the relationship between the act of reading and social position, morality or relational dynamics. The presentation is illustrated by textual passages taken from a corpus made up of the fictional novels of Camilo Castelo Branco. The procedures for analysing the corpus include identifying textual excerpts in which the trait "reader" or "reading" emerges, categorising them and interpreting them in the light of the enunciative perspectives and the historical and social context in which they are inserted. The data obtained shows that literacy and reading play a significant role in the composition of the characters and the relationships they establish with each other, with their relevance varying according to the work and the narrative context.
