| Abstract: | A process, a project, a gesture of attention and continuity. A process can be understood as the succession of thoughts and actions, supported by diverse bodies of knowledge, which, when confronted with a specific circumstance, result in the creation of an object, a situation, or an idea. This dissertation aims to present the method developed for design, taking as its object of study the reconversion of three ruined elements on a quinta in Trás-os-Montes, Quinta Nova. The goal is to achieve a design practice underpinned by rigorous theoretical reflection, capable of responding to real-world demands with sensitivity and critical awareness. The project, the central driver of the investigation, emerges from the desire to revisit and recover the artifact of memory, understanding what it was, what it is, and what it may become. A proposal for the Casa da Quinta Nova is presented, translating a repertoire of thoughts into tangible form and transforming reflection into a constructed object. This material manifestation aims to respond to identified intentions in a coherent and recognizable manner. The focus is thus placed on the design practice itself, reflecting on the importance of understanding the site and its material heritage as the basis for new intentions. The approach rejects both uncritical adherence to tradition and innovation detached from context, seeking instead a critical and attentive reading that allows the reinterpretation and continuation of the existing, synthesizing vernacular knowledge with contemporary demands. The work is organized into three phases: Study (Estudar), Question (Questionar), and Materialize (Concretizar), understood as distinct yet interdependent stages of the same process. Studying and questioning are essential for establishing a solid foundation of references, enabling the architect to develop a rigorous and informed project, and to materialize it in the most appropriate manner. Each concern arising during this process is intended to become a motive for investigation, experimentation, and writing, grounding the decisions that support the final proposal. |
| Description: | Um processo, um projeto, um gesto de atenção e continuidade. Entenda-se por processo, a sucessão de pensamentos e ações apoiadas em diferentes conhecimentos, que, ao confrontar-se com uma circunstância concreta, resultam na criação de um objeto, de uma situação ou de uma ideia. A presente dissertação, propõe expor o método desenvolvido, encontrado para projetar, tendo como objeto de estudo a reconversão de três elementos em ruína numa quinta em Trás-os-Montes, a Quinta Nova. O objetivo é alcançar uma prática projetual sustentada por uma reflexão teórica, capaz de responder às exigências da realidade com sensibilidade e consciência crítica. O projeto, motor de toda a investigação, nasce de uma vontade de revisitar e resgatar o artefacto da memória, compreendendo aquilo que foi, o que é e o que poderá vir a ser. É proposta uma ideia para a Casa da Quinta Nova, reunindo e convertendo o repertório de pensamentos em matéria concreta, transformando a reflexão em objeto construído. Esta manifestação corpórea, visa responder às intenções identificadas, de uma forma coerente e reconhecível. Trata-se portanto, de centrar a atenção na pratica projetual, refletindo sobre a importância de compreender o lugar e a sua herança material como fundamentos de uma nova intenção. Recusa-se tanto o apego acrítico à tradição como a inovação desvinculada do contexto, procurando-se uma leitura crítica e atenta que permita reinterpretar e dar continuidade ao existente, numa síntese entre saberes vernaculares e exigências contemporâneas. O trabalho organiza-se em três momentos: Estudar, Questionar e Concretizar, entendidos como etapas distintas mas interdependentes de um mesmo percurso. É essencial estudar e questionar de forma a criar uma base sólida de referências, que permita ao arquiteto, desenvolver um projeto rigoroso e informado, concretizando-o da forma mais adequada. Pretende-se que cada inquietação vivida neste processo, se torne mote de investigação, ensaio e escrita, fundamentando as decisões que sustentam a proposta final. |
