Arquitetura com Propósito: O Impacto de ONGs na Transformação Comunitária em Portugal

Abstract

Based on a personal experience of volunteering in the field of housing rehabilitation, this master's thesis focuses on the work of Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) in the field of architecture in Portugal. From direct observation of realities marked by inequality in access to decent housing conditions, the desire arose to investigate how architecture can, through the work of these organisations, contribute to the development of a fairer and more participatory community. The research focuses on analysing practices that, through architecture, promote the improvement of living conditions, the direct involvement of communities in the design and building processes, and the strengthening of social ties and belonging to the territory. To this end, three NGOs with different scales of intervention, geographical contexts and operating profiles are analysed, allowing for a comprehensive and comparative reading of the Portuguese reality. Based on these cases, an attempt is made to identify the main challenges faced by these organisations, the methodologies established between technicians, volunteers and communities, and the impacts of their actions. This critical reflection allows us to explore the potential of architecture as a tool for social transformation, highlighting practices that move away from traditional models and favour collaborative, inclusive approaches oriented towards the common good. In this sense, this dissertation sets out to identify the potential and limits of NGO action in the Portuguese context, highlighting their contribution to a more ethical and fair architecture that is centred on people's real needs.
