Abstract

This paper deals with two of the Contos gauchescos by João Simões Lopes Neto from Rio Grande do Sul, representative of two forms of solitude, both pertinent and current: the involuntary and lasting, which results from a collective phenomenon and has to do with territorial planning and age; and another, not necessarily voluntary, in which we are momentarily alone and turn to ourselves, realizing then that we are not alone because we are part of a world that goes far beyond us, and we end up developing a superior form of understanding
