| Abstract: | Design and Build (DB) is the term applied to a method of teaching and practising architecture that combines two fundamental areas - Design and Construction. For the method to apply absolutely, both phases need to be carried out by the same people. This work deals with the application of the method in an academic context only. The gradual distancing of architects from the construction process has had significant consequences for the teaching of architecture, making it increasingly theoretical and abstract. This dissertation analyses the Design and Build method as a possible solution to this issue. The research explores some of the factors that contributed to the origin of the method, namely John Dewey's Learning by Doing ideology, the German Bauhaus art school and the student movements that took place in the United States of America during the 1960s. The dissertation identifies, defines and analyses some of the problems and challenges associated with the method. It also presents a comparative analysis of two case studies: Design in Context Workshop, Norwegian University of Science and Technology; IrreguLab Rebuilding Wood, Bauhaus Universität Weimar and University of Applied Sciences Erfurt. Taking these workshops into account, a survey was carried out among the participating students. This analysis of the case studies revealed notable differences in methodology and organisation. However, both cases were appreciated as having a positive impact on the students' academic career. This study reveals that Design and Build is a full-fledged method because, in addition to combining theory and practice, it is adaptable to each context, transdisciplinary between the academic and social environment and conscious, because it takes reality as a premise in any exercise. Despite the numerous advantages associated with the method, it is still seen as an alternative approach. Currently, in Portugal, the vast majority of higher education curricula do not include Design and Build programmes, which reveals an opportunity to be taken into consideration in the future. |
| Description: | Design and Build (DB) é o termo aplicado a um método de ensino e prática da arquitetura que combina duas áreas fundamentais - Projeto e Construção. Para que o método se aplique de forma absoluta, é necessário que ambas as fases sejam concretizadas pelos mesmos responsáveis. Este trabalho aborda a aplicação do método apenas em contexto académico. O afastamento gradual dos arquitetos do processo de construção tem trazido consequências significativas para o ensino da arquitetura, tornando-o cada vez mais teórico e abstrato. A presente dissertação analisa o método Design and Build como possível solução para essa questão. A investigação explora alguns fatores que contribuíram para a origem do método, nomeadamente a ideologia Learning by doing, de John Dewey, a escola de artes alemã Bauhaus e os movimentos estudantis que ocorreram nos Estados Unidos da América durante a década de 1960. A dissertação identifica, define e analisa alguns problemas e desafios associados ao método. Para além disso, apresenta uma análise comparativa de dois casos práticos: Workshop Design in Context, Norwegian University of Science and Technology; IrreguLab Rebuilding Wood, Bauhaus Universität Weimar e University of Applied Sciences Erfurt. Tendo em consideração estes Workshops, foi realizado um inquérito aos estudantes participantes. Esta análise dos casos práticos revelou diferenças notáveis na metodologia e organização. No entanto, ambos os casos foram apreciados com impacto positivo no percurso académico dos estudantes. Este estudo revela que Design and Build é um método pleno pois, para além de combinar a teoria e a prática, é adaptável a cada contexto, transdisciplinar entre o meio académico e social e consciente, por tomar a realidade como premissa em qualquer exercício. Apesar das inúmeras vantagens associadas ao método, este ainda é entendido como uma abordagem alternativa. Atualmente, em Portugal, a grande maioria dos planos de estudos do ensino superior não incluem programas Design and Build, o que revela uma oportunidade a ser tida em consideração no futuro. |
