Abstract

The Centre for Humanistic Studies, attached to the University of Porto, inaugurated in 1947, stood out for the impulse it gave to teaching and research in the field of Humanities, promoting courses, conferences and other events. By creating a network of intellectual and cultural exchanges, both nationally and internationally, it fulfilled its purpose of forming, more than just students, critical minds with knowledge of general themes, capable of contributing to society's enrichment. The study of this topic aims to enlighten the praiseworthy relevance of High Spirits of the Faculty of Medicine of Porto in creating and running the Centre for Humanistic Studies, namely Professors Luís de Pina, Amândio Tavares and Fernando Magano. It also seeks to recover the memory of the Centre, which, at the time, rekindled the flame of Humanities in the city. Where cultural and academic darkness had previously reigned after the extinction of the first Faculty of Arts and Humanities, a new institution arose, capable of paving the way for the Faculty's much-desired rebirth. Documentary research was conducted in University of Porto's Libraries and in digital Repositories and Libraries, and interviews were done in order to better understand the Centre's origins, evolution and legacy.
