Abstract

Dr. João Maria de Araújo Correia was born on January 1st, 1899, in Canelas do Douro, within the municipality of Peso da Régua. He distinguished himself as a prominent physician in his hometown and as a writer, serving as a meticulous chronicler of everyday life in the Douro region. Graduating from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto in 1927, Araújo Correia became a foundational figure in the Douro through his medical practice, providing care to all sectors of society with professionalism, precision, and an exceptionally humanistic approach. As the author of numerous works spanning short stories, chronicles, and philological studies, and possessing an extensive and invaluable collection of correspondence, he drew inspiration from his daily professional experiences, translating them into texts that serve as authentic historical records of the Douro people-individuals who, despite numerous adversities, persist and define themselves through their labor. Honored on multiple occasions at both regional and national levels, he exemplified the intrinsic connection between Medicine and Literature, demonstrating that human concerns can and should be sublimated into text by those who, beyond mere vocation or talent, feel a visceral need to write and convey the human essence that surrounds them.
