| Title: | Alberto da Silva e Sousa: an example of the confluence of Art and Medicine in Porto |

| Abstract: | Introduction: Alberto da Silva e Sousa (1892-1968), a doctor and artist who graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of Porto (FMUP) and the School of Fine Arts of Porto (ESBAP), excelled in areas such as painting, sculpture, music, engraving and writing. This dissertation aims to remember his vast knowledge and honour his technical and artistic legacy. Material and Methods: Documents and photographs from institutions such as the FMUP Library, Archive and Anatomy Institute, and the ESBAP Archive were consulted, complemented by interviews to clarify documentary information. Results: Graduating from FMUP in 1921, Alberto de Sousa illustrated countless research papers with technical rigour and was appointed Draughtsman in 1926. He studied in Paris and London, specialising in Comparative and Artistic Anatomy, and completed his degree in Painting at ESBAP in 1940, where he became Professor of Artistic Anatomy. He exhibited award-winning works in national and international competitions. Discussion: Alberto de Sousa established a pioneering bridge between Art and Science, creating iconographic representations of high aesthetic-scientific rigour, such as wax and plaster modelling, illustrations and watercolours, which revolutionised medical teaching and artistic practice, consolidating Artistic Anatomy in Portugal and leaving an international legacy. Conclusion: The sources consulted prove the relevance of Alberto de Sousa's work, standing out as an exemplary teacher and researcher, whose pioneering contribution to anatomical modelling and scientific illustration set a benchmark of excellence, influencing later generations. |
| Description: | Introdução: Alberto da Silva e Sousa (1892-1968), médico e artista formado pela Faculdade de Medicina do Porto (FMUP) e pela Escola Superior de Belas-Artes do Porto (ESBAP), destacou-se em áreas como a pintura, a escultura, a música, a gravura e a redação. Esta dissertação visa relembrar o seu vasto conhecimento e homenagear o seu legado técnico e artístico. Material e Métodos: Foram consultados documentos e fotografias de instituições como a Biblioteca, o Arquivo e o Instituto de Anatomia da FMUP e o Arquivo da ESBAP, complementados por entrevistas para esclarecer informações documentais. Resultados: Formado pela FMUP em 1921, o Professor Alberto de Sousa ilustrou com rigor técnico inúmeros trabalhos de investigação, sendo nomeado Desenhador em 1926. Estudou em Paris e Londres, especializando-se em Anatomia Comparada e Artística, e concluiu o Curso Superior de Pintura na ESBAP em 1940, onde se tornou professor de Anatomia Artística. Expôs obras premiadas em certames nacionais e internacionais. Discussão: O Professor Alberto de Sousa estabeleceu uma ponte pioneira entre a Arte e a Ciência, criando representações iconográficas de elevado rigor estético-científico, como modelagens em cera e gesso, ilustrações e aguarelas, que revolucionaram o ensino médico e a prática artística, consolidando a Anatomia Artística em Portugal e deixando um legado internacional. Conclusão: As fontes consultadas comprovam a relevância do trabalho do Professor Alberto de Sousa, destacando-se como docente e investigador exemplar, cujo contributo pioneiro para a modelação anatómica e a ilustração científica estabeleceu um marco de excelência, influenciando gerações posteriores. |
