| Abstract: | Introduction: Professor Manuel Machado Rodrigues Gomes was a pioneer in Cardiac Surgery in Portugal, standing out as a university professor, clinician, surgeon and manager of health units, with an impact on social action as well. This work is intended to honour his dedication to innovation and the growth of medicine, always striving for the common good. Methodology: The research was based on analysing documents from institutional archives, including curricula and academic records. Interviews were also conducted with Professors Adelino Leite Moreira, José Fragata, Manuel Guerreiro, Dr Isabel Mota and Professor Rodrigues Gomes himself. Results: He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto and specialised at the Mayo Clinic in the USA, where he obtained a Master of Science in Surgery in 1970. He was appointed Head of the Thoracic Surgery Department in 1979 and Full Professor in 1987. In 1975, he performed the first intracardiac surgery in the north of Portugal. In 1995, he joined the board of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. Discussion: Rigorous both as a surgeon and as a manager, he is seen by his disciples and friends as a pioneer, innovator and leader of excellence, having built a school that is still an influence today. However, according to him, his greatest legacy is his family. Conclusion: In the Bicentenary of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto, it is essential to celebrate figures such as Professor Rodrigues Gomes, who marked medicine by his clinical excellence and the humanism of his practice. |
| Description: | Introdução: O Professor Manuel Machado Rodrigues Gomes foi pioneiro na Cirurgia Cardíaca em Portugal, destacando-se como professor universitário, clínico, cirurgião e gestor de unidades de saúde, com impacto também na ação social. Este trabalho pretende homenagear a sua dedicação à inovação e ao crescimento da Medicina, sempre prezando pelo bem comum. Métodos: A pesquisa baseou-se na análise de documentos de arquivos institucionais, incluindo currículos e registos académicos. Foram também realizadas entrevistas aos Professores Adelino Leite Moreira, José Fragata, Manuel Guerreiro, à Dra. Isabel Mota e ao próprio Professor Rodrigues Gomes. Resultados: Licenciado pela Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade do Porto, especializou-se na Clínica Mayo, nos EUA, onde obteve o grau de Master of Science in Surgery em 1970. Foi nomeado Chefe de Clínica do Serviço de Cirurgia Torácica em 1979 e Professor Catedrático em 1987. Em 1975, realizou a primeira cirurgia intracardíaca no norte do país. Em 1995, passou a integrar a direção da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian. Discussão: Rigoroso, tanto como cirurgião e como gestor, é visto pelos seus discípulos e conviventes como um pioneiro, inovador e líder de excelência, tendo construído uma escola que ainda hoje é influência. No entanto, segundo o próprio, o seu maior legado é a sua família. Conclusão: No Bicentenário da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade do Porto, é essencial celebrar figuras como o Professor Rodrigues Gomes, que marcou a Medicina pela excelência clínica e pelo humanismo da sua prática. |
