Nuno Grande: Um Homem que faz falta...

Abstract

Nuno Lídio Pinto Rodrigues Grande was born on February 23, 1932. He graduated in Medicine from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP) in 1957, the year in which he was invited by Prof. Dr. Hernâni Bastos Monteiro, his master, to be an Anatomy´s Voluntary Assistant, beginning this way his university career. He completed his doctorate in 1965 and moved to Angola. After nine years living in Angola, where he was director of the Course of Medicine and Surgery and Pro-Rector of the University of Luanda, he returned to Portugal in 1974, and founded the Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences, in Porto, in 1975, where he was a professor and director of the Anatomy Department and president of the Board of Directors, president of the Assembly of Representatives and president of the Scientific Council. In 1988, he was appointed Pro-Rector for social affairs at the University of Porto. He played a highly active civic role, belonging to various scientific and cultural societies and was the national representative for Maria de Lourdes Pintasilgo's candidacy for the Presidential election in 1986. He is remembered by his colleagues and family as a humble, available, and empathetic person. He died in 2012, aged eighty, due to cardiovascular and neurological complications
