This paper deals with the theme of anthropomorphic gold and silver ex-votos found in churches, hermitages and sanctuaries under the jurisdiction of the Military Orders of Santiago and Cristo, during the first half of the 16th century. The detailed descriptions recorded in the Cadernos de Visitação [Visitations Books] provide an insight into the symbolic and material value attributed to these pieces, the technical issues, the purpose for which they were intended, how long they lived in the sacred spaces and the worship images with which they were associated.
