| Issue Date: | 2024-11-13 |
| Abstract: | Viktor Frankl's logotherapy aims to help individuals find meaning in life, a crucial factor in their psychological well-being. However, the effectiveness of logotherapy in current therapeutic contexts is not yet fully established and faces some criticism. This systematic review, which seeks to assess the relevance of logotherapy to contemporary psychology and determine its therapeutic benefits, followed the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) and Cochrane Collaboration. Research conducted in EBSCOhost, Web of Science, PubMed, and SciELO identified 1,500 articles, with an additional 34 added through manual searching. After a detailed analysis, 32 primary studies published between 2012 and 2024 were included, which evaluated the effectiveness of logotherapy in adults with physical and/or mental health issues. The results indicate that logotherapy appears to have a positive impact on the well-being and quality of life of individuals with various conditions (e.g., cancer, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, cardiovascular problems), significantly reducing (p between ≤ 0.001 and ≤ 0.05) anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, and hopelessness, while significantly increasing (p between ≤ 0.001 and ≤ 0.05) meaning of life, self-esteem, resilience, and interpersonal skills. One study revealed that logotherapy and acceptance and commitment therapy have similar efficacy in reducing death anxiety. However, despite logotherapy's effectiveness in different contexts of clinical and health psychology, further research is needed to generalise these results. |
