Abstract

Introduction: Professor Eduardo Esteves Pinto is one of the notable individuals who brought progress to the medical world. This dissertation has as its main objective to honor the University Professor and Surgeon of excellence that privileged humility and humanity in his routine. Methodology: The investigation was based on detailed research at the Repositório Temático da Universidade do Porto and the Archive and Library of Casa da Prelada. The articles written in his homage, in the Portuguese Magazine of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, by Professor Hernâni Lencastre and Professor Pedro Bastos, were essential to the completion of this thesis. In addition, it included the testimony of Professor Pedro Bastos, Professor Manuel Rodrigues Gomes and Professor Walter Osswald. His family aided in the making of this investigation by facilitating information and photographs. Results: He initiated his academic and surgical career in the year 1933, in the Faculty of Medicine of Porto and in the Hospital Santo António, respectively, after completing his medical degree in Faculty of Medicine of Porto. Being a surgeon gifted with a refined technique, he stood out in the treatment of patients with pulmonary tuberculosis, in the Sanatorium D. Manuel II and Sanatorium-Hospital Rodrigues Semide. In 1938, he took over the role of Professor of Pneumotisiology at the Faculty of Medicine of Porto. He became a jubilee in 1979, leaving behind disciples who remember him as an example of humility and professionalism. Discussion: Professor Eduardo Esteves Pinto executed functions of great responsibility since he had a relatively rapid ascend in his academic and surgical career, the fruit of his performance, dedication and competencies. Professor of Pneumotisiology, Thoracic Surgeon and Director of the Pneumotisiology Department of the Hospital São João, Eduardo Esteves Pinto was a sounding name during his lifetime, from 1909 to 1989. A husband and a father of three daughters, he left behind an enormous sense of longing, in 1989, when he passed away, victim of prolonged disease. Conclusion: In an era where the future is so uncertain, it is of crucial pertinence to remember those who brought progress without forgetting the importance of humanity when treating others. Professor Eduardo Esteves Pinto was a master and a caretaker who should be honored and remembered, serving as an example to those who, like me, are soon beginning their professional journey.
