| Abstract: | Professor Manuel Rui Garcia Carrapato (1946-2021) was a physician, researcher and university lecturer who performed various duties over the years. He always stood out for his excellence, which made him a remarkable figure in Medicine, constantly contributing to the progress of Paediatrics, particularly of Neonatology. This research was based on the analysis of the documentation made available by the Documentary Archives of the "Maximiano Lemos" Museum of the History of Medicine, the Archive of the Library of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto and the Archive of the Rectory of the University of Porto, which enriched the information obtained from the testimony of distinguished personalities who shared their different experiences with the Professor. Having received a degree in Medicine from the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon, he continued his studies in London, where he obtained the Diploma of Child Health awarded by the Royal College of Physicians of London and the Royal College of Surgeons of England. His dedication made his career transcended borders, as he assumed the presidency of the European (1998-2000) and World (2005-2007) Societies of Perinatal Medicine. In recognition of his merit, he was made an Honorary Member in various countries and received the prestigious Erich Saling Prize. Professor's life and legacy is the reflection of his work and the excellence he adopted at all times. He successfully balanced his professional life with his personal life, leaving behind an example for his daughters and grandchildren to follow and a remarkable legacy among his peers. | Description: | O Professor Doutor Manuel Rui Garcia Carrapato (1946-2021), foi médico, investigador e docente universitário. Exercendo várias funções ao longo dos anos, destacou-se sempre pela sua excelência o que o levou a ser uma figura marcante na Medicina, tendo contribuído constantemente para o progresso e desenvolvimento da área da Pediatria, em particular na Neonatologia. A investigação fundamentou-se na análise do espólio disponibilizado pelo Arquivo Documental do Museu de História da Medicina "Maximiano Lemos", Arquivo da Biblioteca da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade do Porto e pelo Arquivo da Reitoria da Universidade do Porto, enriquecendo a informação obtida com o testemunho de distintas personalidades que compartilharam as suas diferentes vivências com o Professor. Licenciado em Medicina pela Faculdade Medicina de Lisboa, prosseguiu estudos em Londres, onde obteve o Diploma of Child Health conferido pela Royal College of Physicians of London e pela Royal College of Surgeons of England. A dedicação fez com que a sua carreira transcendesse fronteiras, assumindo a presidência das Sociedades Mundial (2005-2007) e Europeia (1998-2000) de Medicina Perinatal. Reconhecido pelo seu mérito, foi distinguido como Membro Honorário em diversos países e recebeu o prestigiado prêmio Erich Saling Prize. A vida e obra do Professor são o reflexo do seu trabalho, determinação e dedicação constantes. Soube conciliar a sua vida profissional com a sua vida pessoal, deixando um exemplo para as suas filhas e netos seguirem e um notável legado reconhecido entre os seus pares.
