Abstract

Joaquim Gomes Ferreira Alves was born in 1883 in Porto. He distinguished himself as a doctor in the treatment of children affected by extrapulmonary tuberculosis. As the founder of the Northern Maritime Sanatorium, the first in northern Portugal, and the Heliântia Clinic, and as the first director of the Maritime Sanatorium Colony of Foz do Douro, Ferreira Alves was a pioneer in the fields of Heliotherapy and Thalassotherapy. In addition to his modern clinical practice, he was concerned with social and educational issues, promoting reading, publishing the Girassol Newspaper, and facilitating the learning of children interned in his facilities to reintegrate them as active members of society. He was also known for his artistic inclinations, his love for poetry, and primarily for his passion for photography. He captured on thousands of photos the European cities he traveled to, significant memories of his time. A charismatic and beneficent personality, he undoubtedly contributed to the advancement of medicine in Portugal, leaving a lasting legacy in the country's public health history. He was decorated with the insignia of the Order of Benemerence and is currently honored with the inclusion of his name at the Valadares Secondary School and the Northern Physical Rehabilitation Center.
