| Title: | The Perspective and Preferences of Adolescents in Addressing Sensitive Health Topics with their Family Doctor - The Influence of Childhood Adversities |
| Issue Date: | 2023-12-07 |
| Abstract: | In adolescence, it is of paramount importance to address sensitive health topics, which include sexuality, substance use, bullying victimization, family problems and childhood adversities. Although few adolescents receive personalized counselling for sensitive health concerns, they would welcome the opportunity to discuss them with their family doctor. Tailoring healthcare to adolescents requires to consider their opinions on what is most significant to them in their care. It is also important to know the experiences of adolescents in discussing sensitive topics and to understand the impact it can have on their quality of life. The purpose of this study was to determine whether having experienced childhood adversities influences the adolescent perspectives and preferences on addressing sensitive health topics with their family doctors. Furthermore, we studied if addressing sensitive topics improves health-related quality of life of adolescents. In this cross-sectional observational study, the study population were students of the tenth, eleventh and twelfth grades from Escola Secundária de Penafiel. A total of 249 students, from the 11 selected classes, answered a questionnaire survey specifically developed for this study, after written informed consent from their parents. A total of 245 students, aged between 15 and 19 years old, were included in the data analysis. |
