| Title: | A Dualidade da Escada em Edifícios de Habitação Plurifamiliar em Portugal, 1951-2020 |

| Abstract: | The stair is defined as a set of steps that connect the different levels of a building. This dissertation seeks to study the stairs in multi-family housing, focusing on buildings with vertical access core and gallery access that contain duplex dwellings, in order to understand both the buildings' common stair and the private residence stair. In the European context, existing studies on the stairwell are mainly oriented towards its symbolic or constructive aspects, giving little attention to the legal design codes. To try and overcome this aspect, the Portuguese legislation regarding stairs is analysed from the first draft of the General Regulation of Urban Buildings in 1951 to the last amendment of the Technical Regulation on Fire Safety in Buildings in 2020, analysing the increase in legal constraints and the evolution of the stairwells' characteristics. Alongside this analysis, ten buildings, designed at different times, and that are presented alongside the study of legislation are studied and drawn to understand what practical influence this legal code has had. The knowledge acquired from these three branches of study allows us to explore different pertinent issues regarding the design of the staircase, from its history to the elements that make it up. |
| Description: | A escada é definida como um conjunto de degraus que liga os diferentes níveis duma construção. A dissertação procura estudar o tema da escada em habitação plurifamiliar, focando-se em edifícios com acesso vertical múltiplo e com acesso em galeria que contenham fogos duplex, para assim se compreender tanto a escada comum do edifício como a escada privada do fogo. No contexto europeu os estudos existentes sobre a escada são sobretudo orientados para as vertentes simbólica ou construtiva, dedicando-se pouco ao enquadramento legal. Para tentar colmatar este aspeto analisa-se a legislação portuguesa acerca da escada desde a primeira redação do Regulamento Geral das Edificações Urbanas em 1951 até à última alteração do Regulamento Técnico de Segurança contra Incêndio em Edifícios em 2020, examinando o aumento de condicionantes legais e a evolução das características da escada. Em simultâneo com esta análise são estudados e desenhados dez edifícios que foram projetados em diferentes épocas e que se apresentam a par do estudo da legislação para compreender que influência prática esta tem tido. Os conhecimentos adquiridos com estas três frentes de estudo permitem explorar diferentes assuntos pertinentes relativamente ao desenho da escada, da história aos elementos que a compõem. |
