| Abstract: | Sodium nitrite is a water-soluble, white, odorless powder, similar to table salt, used in suicide attempts as increasingly reported, including in Portugal. It is described as a cheap, easily obtained (via internet), and pain-free/peaceful lethal substance. The mechanisms involved in fatal intoxications seem to be associated with the disturbance of physiological processes, mainly the impairment of oxygen transport by blood. However, many other processes are still to be explored. The purpose of this work is to study the mechanisms involved in fatal poisoning by nitrites and thus be able to contribute to the prevention and treatment of future poisonings. |
| Description: | O nitrito de sódio é um pó solúvel em água, branco, inodoro, semelhante ao sal de cozinha, utilizado em tentativas de suicídio, cada vez mais frequentes, inclusivamente em Portugal. É descrito como uma substância letal barata, de fácil obtenção (via internet) e indolor. Os mecanismos envolvidos nestas intoxicações fatais parecem estar associados ao distúrbio de processos fisiológicos, principalmente o comprometimento do transporte de oxigénio pelo sangue. Contudo, muitos outros processos ainda precisam de ser explorados. O intuito deste trabalho é estudar os mecanismos envolvidos na intoxicação fatal por nitritos e, assim, poder contribuir para a prevenção e tratamento de intoxicações futuras. |
