Issue Date: 2023-11-20
Abstract: Objective: The objective of this study was to describe national prescribing trends of antidiabetic medications in Portugal from 2019 to 2021, across different Regional Healthcare Administration and Primary Health Care models. Research Design and Methods: A retrospective, cross-sectional study with the examined family medicine drug prescription from January 1, 2019, to December 31, 2021. Differences in mean prescribing between 2019 and 2021 for each medication class were calculated. Results: an annual increase in encoded diabetic population results in an increased number of diabetic drug prescription. Metformin continues to be the most prescribed drug in Portugal. The new drugs SGLT2i and GLP-1RA fills increased year over year, while DPP4i, sulfonylureas, thiazolidinediones decreased, with a direct cost increase. The Primary Healthcare Models can influence the diabetic control. Conclusion: Our study demonstrates a shift in antidiabetic medication class utilization from 2019 to 2021.
Description: The Diabetes Mellitus (DM) estimated prevalence in the Portuguese population in 2018 was 13.6%, in the age between 20 and 79 years old. The impact of the aging of the Portuguese population´s age was reflected in a 1.9% increase in the Diabetes prevalence rate between 2009 and 2018, which corresponds to a growth of around 16.3% in the last 10 years. Primary Health Care (PHC) plays a key role in the management of Diabetes Mellitus. We conducted a retrospective, cross-sectional study with analysis of prescription data from Portuguese Family Doctors from January 1, 2019 to December 31, 2021. The Primary Health Care Identity Card (BI-CSP) constituted the database used to identify drugs prescribed and dispensed to NHS users.
