Castro de Guifões: elementos para a reconstituição paleogeográfica e compreensão da ocupação antiga do sítio

Abstract

Documented since the middle of the 1st millennium BC, the occupation of Castro de Guifões extended to the ancient Leça estuary. The GUIFARQ Research Project has sought to clarify the importance of the site's relationship with the river and the Atlantic, attested by archaeological materials and described in historiographic sources. A research program at the intersection of Archaeology and Fluvial Geomorphology contributes to the understanding of the environmental surroundings of that occupation through digital modelling of the area, non-intrusive geophysical inspections, and intrusive geotechnical tests for geometric and architectural characterization of the alluvial sedimentary sequence that borders the archaeological structures at the base of the slope. The first results demonstrate the extension of the built-up area to the south and suggest consequent differences in the configuration of this recessed sector of the estuary during the ancient occupation.
