Do comprometimento dos espaços de habitar monásticos : românico e restauro sob o Estado Novo

Abstract

During the Estado Novo (1926-1974) and until about the middle of the twentieth century, the Middle Ages, as a historical period, enjoyed special preference, reflecting an allegedly perfect union between power and Faith, but also of a perfect tripartite society. From 1929 onwards, it was the responsibility of the General Director of National Buildings and Monuments (DGEMN) to undertake the restoration of the historic and artistic heritage of the Nation, and in this context, those buildings built in the Romanesque period were particularly chosen. In some monastic structures, such as Paço de Sousa (Penafiel), Salvador de Travanca (Amarante) or Cárquere (Resende), the houses of habitation were compromised in favour of another legibility that one wanted to give to its church, thus accentuating its historical value.
