Seus troncos varonis recordam-me pilastras: a presença da emblemática no cinema português da primeira metade do século XX

Abstract

Cinema initially asserts itself as a «silent» medium, mostly visual, in which images and texts establish dialogic relationships through textual elements that, in addition to dialogues or narrations, also allow the inclusion of contextual elements or comments. This convention promotes constructions that bring silent cinema closer to a relationship between texts and images that is affiliated with the verbal-visual culture and that is relatable to emblematic, abounding mottos and aphorisms, as well as latent images and constructions like ekphrasis, which will remain with the transition to sound film. We therefore propose an analysis of cinema in the light of emblematic, having as object an exploratory reading of a selection of films available in critically restored editions, through an analysis according to the perspectives of visual studies and intermediality.
