O Professor Universitário e Neurocirurgião Celso Cruz: Uma Vida Dedicada às Neurociências

Abstract

Celso Renato Paiva Rodrigues da Cruz (1936 - 2004) was a neurosurgeon, Director of the Neurology and Neurosurgery Service at Hospital de São João, and Chair Professor at Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade do Porto, where he graduated. He began his mark in history, still a student, participating in the first neurosurgical intervention at the Hospital de São João. After 1963, he began to lead the neurosurgery team and initiated the construction of a notable multidisciplinary team, building stone by stone, the Neurology and Neurosurgery Service that he directed for 35 years. His dedication also gave rise to the Neurology and Neurosurgery Unit at Centro Hospitalar do Funchal in 1995. From the beginning, his medical career was accompanied by teaching activity at his forming institution, initially as a Voluntary Assistant and progressing his academic carrer to become a Chair Professor at the Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade do Porto in 1983. This dissertation intends to simultaneously pay tribute and create a record of the life and work of Professor Celso Cruz, highlighting the marks of his legacy and constituting a compilation of information for the historical record of the Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade do Porto and of the Portuguese Medicine.
