| Title: | Treating substance abuse in patients with autism spectrum disorders - a systematic review |

| Abstract: | Background: Although the treatment of substance abuse in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) might require adaptations, there are no guidelines to follow. The aim of this systematic review was to synthesize the existing research about the treatment of substance abuse in this population. Methods: A search was conducted on 7 of December 2022 in Pubmed, PsycINFO, Web of Science and Scopus. Of an initial 1929 records, three addressed the treatment of substance abuse in individuals with ASD and were included in the review. The risk of bias was assessed through National Institutes of Health's quality assessment tools. Results: Two of the three records were intervention studies exploring cognitive-behavioural therapy adapted for the treatment of individuals with ASD (one using individual sessions, the other using group sessions), with positive results. The third was a cross-sectional study on substance abuse therapists' reports about working with individuals with ASD and helpful treatment adaptations. Conclusion: Adaptations to the treatment of substance abuse for individuals with ASD yield positive results. Only three studies were included in this review, one of which had a small sample size, and future research is necessary to produce evidence-based guidelines. |
| Description: | Contexto: Embora o tratamento do abuso de substâncias em indivíduos com perturbações do espectro do autismo (PEA) possa necessitar de adaptações, não existem orientações a seguir. O objetivo desta revisão sistemática foi sintetizar os estudos de investigação existentes sobre o tratamento do abuso de substâncias nesta população. Métodos: Foi realizada uma pesquisa no dia 7 de dezembro de 2022 na Pubmed, PsycINFO, Web of Science e Scopus. De um total inicial de 1929 resultados, três abordavam o abuso de substâncias em indivíduos com PEA e foram incluídos na revisão. O risco de viés foi avaliado através da aplicação das ferramentas de avaliação de qualidade do National Institutes of Health. Resultados: Dois dos três resultados eram estudos de intervenção que exploraram a terapia cognitivo-comportamental adaptada para o tratamento de indivíduos com PEA (um com sessões individuais e outro com sessões em grupo), com resultados positivos. O terceiro era um estudo transversal sobre as perspetivas de terapeutas de abuso de substâncias sobre trabalhar com indivíduos com PEA e adaptações úteis para o tratamento. Conclusão: Adaptações no tratamento para o abuso de substâncias em indivíduos com PEA apresentam resultados positivos. Apenas três estudos foram incluídos nesta revisão, um dos quais com um tamanho amostral reduzido, e investigação futura é necessária para produzir orientações baseadas na evidência. |
