| Title: | Online Infidelity and the perspective of a more Nonmonogamous future of Love |

| Abstract: | The ubiquitous nature of mobile internet-connected devices, in most developed countries, allows for unprecedented levels of connection at the end of one's fingertips. Thus, the internet presents itself as an especially attractive medium for those seeking romantic partners online, even for those already in a committed relationship. Online (facilitated) infidelity is an emerging problematic in both day-to-day lives and therapeutical settings. With this review, we aim to assess overlapping tendencies surrounding the surge of online (facilitated) infidelity - considering historical and sociological backgrounds. We have contextualized the available evidence on online infidelity in the light of explanatory psychological theories regarding human behavior, relationship satisfaction, and inherent human needs. It is argued that the rise of online extradyadic behavior is a reflection of the discrepancy between the needs one expects/seeks to see fulfilled in the context of a monogamic relationship and how well are monogamous couples equipped to meet these rising expectations of modern days. Additionally, the implication of a potential rise in nondyadic relationship structures is discussed. |
| Description: | A natureza ubíqua de dispositivos móveis conectados à internet, em maior parte dos países desenvolvidos, abre a possibilidade para níveis de conexão nunca antes vistos ao alcance de todos. Como tal, a internet apresenta-se como um meio especialmente atraente para aqueles que procuram parceiros românticos online, mesmo para pessoas já comprometidas a uma relação romântica. Infidelidade (facilitada por meios) online trata-se de uma problemática emergente - quer no quotidiano, quer em contexto clínico. Nesta revisão, esperamos aferir quaisquer tendências associadas ao surto de infidelidade (facilitada por meios) online - tendo em consideração contexto histórico e social. A evidência científica disponível alusiva a infidelidade online foi contextualizada tendo em conta teorias em psicologia sobre comportamento humano, satisfação com relações afetivas, e necessidades humanas. Argumenta-se que a crescente prevalência de comportamento extradiádico online reflete a discrepância entre as necessidades que um espera/procura satisfazer no contexto de uma relação monógama e o quão preparados estão os casais monógamos para concretizar essas ditas expectativas da atualidade. Adicionalmente, é discutido o consequente potencial aumento na prevalência de estruturas relacionais não diádicas. |
