Carlos Sampaio Pinto de Lima: um tributo ao legado de um prestigiado Professor Universitário e Ortopedista

Abstract

Professor Doctor Carlos Sampaio Pinto de Lima (27/04/1921 - 08/02/1993) was an illustrious figure in the History of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, particularly in the Orthopaedics and Traumatology Service of the current Centro Hospitalar e Universitário S. João and in the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto. He was the first to reach the Chair of Orthopaedics in Portugal, having taken office as Full Professor in 1972. He played an active role in the History of Orthopaedics and Traumatology by assuming the position of Director of Orthopaedic Services at Hospital de Crianças Maria Pia and Centro Hospitalar e Universitário S. João. He was also President of the Portuguese Society of Orthopedics and Traumatology (SPOT), chairman of the Girdlestone Orthopaedic Society and Clinical Director of Centro Hospitalar e Universitário S. João. His work was recognized by the then President of the Portuguese Republic, Professor Mário Soares, who awarded him the Degree of Grand Officer of the Order of Santiago e Espada, in 1990. He is described by those close to him as an extremely cultured, rigorous and demanding person, but also understanding, kind and empathetic. The legacy left by Professor Doctor Carlos Lima continues to be recognized by new generations, in particular by the Centro Hospitalar e Universitário S. João and the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto, who recognize him as playing a fundamental role in the development of scientific knowledge in the area of Orthopaedics and the organization of the respective Service. This dissertation serves to praise his contribution to National and International Orthopaedics, and, even more importantly, to honour the Person he was, inside and outside his Institutions.
