Issue Date: 2010-12-15
Abstract: The shopping as an issue of Architecture is the object of the study of this thesis. Despite its stronger and stronger presence in our everyday life and in various programmes of the discipline, its study has been little valued and the position of the architect is distant when facing this new commercial typology that attracts millions of people and has proved to be increasingly presente and adaptable to the needs of contemporary life: the Shopping Centre. Analyzing its historical and typological evolution, the aim is to observe the international context and the Portuguese context - where the commercial typology is kept outside the architectural production circle. Architecture is a means to achieve an evolution of the typology and form of the commercial architectural object. Consequently, the study will focus on a contextual analysis of the problem: the architect and his relationship with the architecture of the shopping centre in the international and Portuguese case. Firstly the historical context of the commercial typologies in each of the realities is exposed. Secondly my purpose is to identify and represent some concepts and characteristics resulting from the relation between shopping centre and architecture, associated with each context, based on studies of some authors such as Jean Baudrillard, Josep Maria Montaner, Marc-Augé, Margaret Crawford, Rem Koolhaas, Robert Venturi, among others. The shopping centre is the central typology of this analysis. Through international and national cases of study, analyzed on paper or in loco, two realities of this typology and the reason of the exclusion from the practice and theory of architecture are evidenced. In a world where everything comes down to the shopping and where everything seems like a shopping, will it be possible a future without it?
