| Abstract: | This essay intends to acknowledge and think about domestic architecture as it pertains to the idea that "housing is one of the preeminent aspects that reveal and answer to the structures in the society it belongs to".2 The study of single-family, individualized housing is particularly interesting considering the freedom that it enables the architect to experiment new space organization techniques, new materials and technologies, new ways of life. As it is such a vast research area, there was an urgent need to simplify it to a smaller research study sample. Therefore, this particular study focuses primarily in the private space outside a single-family house, in a determined time and space; more specifically in Portugal from 1950 to 1970. This time and space was chosen due to a previous research that was also made within the single-family realm. This subject - the train of thought of a singular type of architecture and a generation of architects - came to me, the author, as, browsing magazines, searching for specific articles pertaining to this period, curiosity took over me as I thought about and even, in some cases, visited different author houses, while, at the same time, I carried on an investigation about a particular architect: Maurício de Vasconcellos. The object of this study, "the private space outside a singlefamily house", was a very specific topic, based on the analysis of the work of the previously mentioned architect, Maurício de Vasconcellos, but taking a different path. |
| Description: | Pretende-se com este trabalho uma reflexão e compreensão da arquitectura doméstica, uma vez que "a habitação é na arquitectura um dos programas que melhor responde e revela as estruturas das sociedades em que se integra"1. Interessa particularmente o estudo da habitação unifamiliar, individualizada, pela liberdade que proporciona ao arquitecto de poder experimentar novas formas de organização do espaço, novos materiais e tecnologias, novos modos de vida. Sendo uma área de investigação tão vasta, houve naturalmente a necessidade de a reduzir a um campo específico. Deste modo, este trabalho centra-se no estudo do espaço exterior privado da habitação unifamiliar, num local e num período específico, como o próprio título indica: em Portugal, entre 1950 e 1970. A escolha do local e do limite temporal decorre de uma investigação previamente realizada, também, no âmbito da habitação unifamiliar. O despertar para o tema, de análise de um modo de pensar a arquitectura tão singular, de uma geração de arquitectos, foi surgindo à medida que, saltando de revista em revista, em busca de artigos específicos do período, a curiosidade me levava a registar e em alguns casos a visitar casas de diversos autores, ao mesmo tempo que prosseguia com a investigação que estava a realizar para um arquitecto em particular - Maurício de Vasconcellos. O objecto de estudo desta dissertação "o espaço exterior privado da habitação unifamiliar" foi um tema especifico, que surgiu da análise de uma das obras do arquitecto que estudei, Maurício de Vasconcellos, que alimentou novamente a vontade de prosseguir um caminho já iniciado, embora, desta vez, seguindo um trilho diferente. |
