| Abstract: | The work here presented is the culmination of the Integrated Masters in Architecture of the FAUP (Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto). The issue stems from a personal wish to understand and study the context and physical support of architecture, ie. the city. Combined with the personal will, due to the involvement in the CEAU-FAUP (Centre of Studies of Architecture and Urbanism of the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto) as a scholarship researcher, there appears a clear awareness of the processes of the urban explosion and of the new forms of territorialization that we call 'extensive urbanization'. Therefore the road, the linear support of the extensive urbanization, which has been intensifying in recent years is undoubtedly a city-generator process. The public space, as an building element of the city is an indicator of the urban quality, and given the changes in the morphology of the urban territory, there stands before us the question of its role and position in the organization and construction of this recent urban reality. The road is the 'skeleton' of the extensive urbanization, and it is also the public's privileged place. Having stated this, the work is structured in three main parts; The first one consists of the necessary approach to the processes that are related to the new territorial dynamics, the concepts that help us to interpret the new urban reality and the morphologies of its physical materialization. The second part intends to analyze the role of the infrastructures of mobility as a structure of the extensive urbanization, thus approaching the road phenomenon either as part of mobility in this extensive territory or as a building support. Finally, the third part deals with the dimension of the public space, its role in the city, and the changes that it has been going through with the evolution of society. Assuming that the road is the place of the public, whose typology is different from the traditional city, the aim is to understand its (possible) materialization. All along the different parts, an effort will be done to have a parallel analysis of a specific context that goes from the global to the local scale. The global context is centred in Portugal approaching gradually to the context of the Portuguese Northwest, and ending on road EN15 in Vale do Sousa. |
| Description: | O trabalho que aqui se apresenta é o culminar do Mestrado Integrado em Arquitectura da Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade do Porto. O tema resulta de uma vontade pessoal de perceber e estudar o contexto e suporte físico da arquitectura, ou seja, a cidade. Combinado com a vontade pessoal surge, no âmbito da participação no Centro de Estudos de Arquitectura e Urbanismo da Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade do Porto (CEAU-FAUP) enquanto bolseira de investigação, a consciência evidente dos processos de explosão urbana e dos novos modos de territorialização que denominamos como urbanização extensiva. Daqui vem a estrada, o suporte linear da urbanização extensiva, que se intensificou nos últimos anos e que é indubitavelmente um processo gerador de 'cidade'. O espaço público, enquanto elemento construtor de cidade é um indicador de qualidade urbana, e perante as mudanças das morfologias do território urbano, é-nos colocada a questão do seu papel e lugar na organização e construção desta recente realidade urbana. A estrada é o 'esqueleto' da urbanização extensiva, sendo, também, o espaço privilegiado do público. Posto isto, o trabalho organiza-se em três partes principais; Na primeira faz-se a necessária aproximação aos processos que estão relacionados com as novas dinâmicas territoriais, a conceitos que nos ajudam a interpretar a nova realidade urbana e as morfologias da sua materialização física. Numa segunda parte analisa-se a dimensão estruturadora das infra-estruturas de mobilidade na urbanização extensiva, aproximando-nos do fenómeno da estrada quer como elemento de mobilidade neste território extenso, quer como suporte de construção. Por fim, na terceira parte, aborda-se a dimensão do espaço público, o seu papel na cidade, e as mudanças que este sofreu com a evolução da sociedade. Partindo do pressuposto que a estrada é o lugar do público, cuja tipologia é diferente da cidade canónica procura-se entender a sua (possível) materialização. Ao longo de todas as partes, procurar-se-á uma análise paralela de um contexto específico, que vai da escala global até á local. O contexto global centra-se em Portugal aproximando-nos gradualmente do contexto do Noroeste português, e por fim da estrada nacional EN15 no Vale do Sousa. |
