Francisco Suárez e a suficiência das categorias

Abstract

Many years before Arnaud and Nicole accused Aristotle of being arbitrary in his list of the categories, the medieval Scholastic Latin authors worried about this problem and tried to solve it by supplying different justifications for the Aristotelian list. In his Disputationes Metaphysicae, Suárez discusses the same problem and creates his own answer to it. In this paper, I intend to show Suárez's strategy, which consists in asking what exact degree of distinction suffices for considering that a category primarily differs from another, as well as the way he reads the Scholastic tradition on this issue.
