Da Serra do Caramulo. Projeto e Paisagem

Abstract

This dissertation is an experimental exercise on the concepts of project and landscape as producers and products of a disciplinary practice of architecture. This way, architecture is grounded in the theory and in the circumstance of the place of intervention. The project and the themes addressed by it are developed in the search for an understanding of the idiosyncrasies of Serra's do Caramulo territory, specifically the area of its former Sanatorial Resort. The analysis and choice of this territory as an object of study and project driver was based on the fact that it was constituted as a place that once served a specific purpose and that now needs to reinvent the silent space in which it exists. Caramulo is the result of different needs for space organization: from the simple economy (based on pastoralism), to the space for curing tuberculosis (surviving as a symbol of its past purposes), to the present day. The project of the House - space of refuge - tries to define itself as a mechanism for the production and transformation of the relationships between the architectural project, the existing landscape and the new represented landscape. The investigation structure is defined in four distinct moments. In the first chapter we define a position on what are our own and personal ideas of an architectural project, forming the starting point of the reflections that follow. Subsequently, we approach the territory, the ways of life, the architecture and the organization of the space of Caramulo. Thirdly, we present the project and describe the relationships it intends to establish with the place where it is located. At the last moment, we review the meanings of this intervention as a creator of new ways of seeing and understanding the landscape through our own ideas of architecture, the circumstance of Caramulo and the wishes of the project.
