| Title: | The role of opicapone for the treatment of patients with Parkinson's Disease: clinical evidence |

| Abstract: | Opicapone is a recently developed and commercialized drug used for the treatment of Parkinson's disease, a quite prevalent neurodegenerative disease. It belongs to the COMT (Catechol o-methyltransferase)-inhibitors pharmacological class. It still hasn't been found a curative treatment for Parkinson's disease, as in which the current therapeutic guidelines are mainly composed by symptomatic treatment and the improvement of the quality of life with levodopa (L-DOPA), together with AADC inhibitors and another pharmacologic class, such as the COMT-inhibitors. This article aims to review all the particularities of Parkinson's disease, it's relationship with the existing pharmacologic classes of drugs, as well opicapone's action, usefulness and specificities in the current therapeutic setting of Parkinson's based on the most recent data available, given its role as a new drug and investigational innovation of the last few years. |
| Description: | A opicapona é um fármaco de desenvolvimento e comercialização recente para o tratamento da doença de Parkinson, uma doença neurodegenerativa muito prevalente. Faz parte da classe farmacológica dos inibidores da COMT (Catecol O-metiltransférase). A doença ainda não tem tratamento curativo, sendo que a terapêutica atual é composta normalmente por tratamento sintomatológico e de melhoria da qualidade de vida com levodopa (L-DOPA) em conjunto com um inibidor da AADC em conjunto com outra classe farmacológica, por exemplo, inibidores da COMT. Este artigo resume as particularidades da doença de Parkinson, a sua relação com as classes farmacológicas existentes assim como a ação, utilidade e especificidades da opicapona no panorama atual de tratamento da doença, baseado nos dados mais recentes, enquanto nova arma terapêutica e inovação investigacional dos últimos anos. |
