Abstract

Manuel da Silva Pinto (1913-1983) was a prestigious Professor and Physician at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Oporto. He graduated in Medicine and Surgery in 1936 and received his PhD in 1943. He taught and investigated in the fields of Descriptive Anatomy, Topographic Anatomy, Histology and Embryology and Ophthalmology, having published several scientific papers. He assumed the conduction of Histology and Embryology and the Direction of the respective laboratory (1947). He assumed the conduct of Ophthalmology of this Faculty (1955). He created and was the first Director of the Ophthalmology Service of the São João School Hospital (1959), in which he created the Eye Bank. He founded the Luso-Hispano-Brazilian Society of Ophthalmology (1968). Between 1976 and 1978, he was Interim Dean of the University of Oporto.
