Influências norte-americanas na origem da Diabetologia portuguesa na primeira metade do século XX

Abstract

This study aims to show how the transfer of knowledge between North-American and Portuguese medicine allowed to create in the 1920s a new medical area of study and treatment, the diabetology. Despite studies and research on diabetes prior to the 1920s, very little had been done therapeutically. With the end of the Great War, the social diabetology began in the United States, which arrived in Portugal through Dr. Ernesto Roma, who was then at the prestigious Harvard Medical School and who, with his return in 1923, revolutionized the treatment and care of diabetic patients in Portugal.
