Abstract

This dissertation addresses sustainability in the Portuguese and Finnish context through a set of personal influences. We study its geographical context and its effects on vernacular architecture, and finally we analyze single-family dwellings in their contemporary strategies for their sustainable side. Contemporarily, we seek to ensure the comfort of the individual who finds himself in an interior space. The most recent studies indicate that in the quest to maintain an indoor environment at a condition favorable to human well-being, we create an unsustainable dependence on natural resources. In the uncontrolled exploitation of the natural environment arises the issue of sustainable development associated with climate change. The work carried out aims to understand how this problem unfolds in the various ethical issues and questions. We seek to see its direct application to architectural design and influences on human comfort. Certainly, a sustainable architecture must adapt to the climatic environment that surrounds it. Therefore, we study the geographical contextualization associating the modes of popular constructions. It was studied how traditional principles carried in themselves sustainable teachings, and how contemporary architects have adapted to the ecological challenges of today.
