O que é o Sublime?: Um inédito de Correia Garção e a pré-história do melodrama

Abstract

The conference "What is and what defines the sublime style?", presented by Correia Garção to the so called the Academia dos Ocultos of Lisbon, in 1755, has already been the object of our attention in 1988 and 2007. It is a memorable text, namely because it is one of the first texts in the 18th century's Portuguese rhetoric to apply the concept of sublime to a "new theatre". Based on the knowledge of the Boileau's translation and remarks, during the 17th century, the conference of Correia Garção reflects some specificities of the Portuguese context, but also aims an old project of the Italian Renaissance: the association between the "sublime style" and the melodramatic theatre, a "new theater", like the Greek tragedy, once more melting the purposes of Music and Literature.
